Swinging and Statistics

Swinging is a pretty private affair. Most people will not openly admit to being swingers due to the current attitudes of society about the swinging lifestyle. Often, the average non-swinger feels that swingers are immoral sex addicts who are against the accepted mainstream. For this reason, it is rather difficult to get solid statistics about swingers. However, there are still several major studies about the lifestyle that reveal the truth about swinging and who most swingers happen to be. The most comprehensive study is a 2000 study conducted by Dr. Curtis Bergstrand and Jennifer Blevins Williams. While these numbers reveal an interesting look at swinging, the fact that it is a decade old means that things might be a bit different. Swinging has done a lot of growing in the past twelve years, but most of the figures listed below can still give you a decent overview of swinging.

1.) Are Swingers Married?

One of the primary statistics that people wish to know about swingers has to do with marital status. As it turns out, 89.4% of swingers actually are married couples or in a committed relationship. The years in their marriage averages roughly 10.5 years. This bit of information shows how the old adage of swingers being middle-aged couples wanting something new in their lives might actually be true to some extent.

2.) Are Swingers Happy?

When you start looking into swinging, the ultimate question you need to ask yourself is if this will make you happier or will cause more trouble than it is worth. The answer to this question will vary widely based on you, your spouse or partner, and your current relationship dynamics. However, the statistics of those who chose to take the plunge into swinging as it fit their desires and their relationship shows that happiness is included if swinging works for you. The study indicates that 78.5% of swinging couples are happy in their marriage compared to 64% of the general married population. Also, happiness seems to grow as well. Of those reported as being “unhappy” before entering the lifestyle, 90.4% claim to be happier swinging.

3.) What Is the Average Swinger Like?

This question is really the heart of the study and acts as the heart of most people looking into becoming swingers. Many wanting to give swinging a try wish to see if there are swingers out there like them. Then, others wish to discover if swingers are completely different than the general population. The study shows what swingers already know. They are just like any other person and are not (as a general rule) wildly liberal, against religion, and openly sex crazed. The average age of women who start swinging is 31.4 while the average age of men when starting to swing is 35.2. Most have 14.1 years of education. Swingers are equally distributed across all political parties. In terms of religion, 72.1% of swingers have membership in a church, synagogue, mosque, or temple as compared to 61% of the general population.
